Overview
METHERM MD is a multi-component composite silicate insulation board — a member of the METHERM calcium silicate product family designed for applications where a single-layer calcium silicate board does not fully satisfy the engineering or installation requirements. The MD designation identifies a composite structure: the calcium silicate core is combined with one or more additional layers or surface treatments that may include reflective facings, inorganic fibre mats, protective skins, or surface coatings tailored to the end-use environment.
This composite construction expands the application range of calcium silicate insulation into areas where the board must serve multiple simultaneous functions: insulation, surface protection, acoustic damping, or architectural finish. In building and construction applications, METHERM MD is used where fire-rated board must also interface with architectural finishes or where the substrate geometry demands a conformable facing to achieve a clean external surface. In industrial applications, the composite structure can simplify installation by pre-integrating a protective surface layer that would otherwise require a separate site-applied cladding operation.
All METHERM MD boards are non-combustible Class A, asbestos-free, and dimensionally stable in service. Like other METHERM calcium silicate products, MD boards are rigid, machinable, and suitable for sawing, drilling, and cutting on-site.
Contact the sales team for full technical data, available composite configurations, service temperature ratings, and application-specific recommendations. Composite silicate products are a wider family than single-component boards; the specific construction and performance of METHERM MD should be confirmed for each project type.

Applications
Structural Steelwork Fire Protection
METHERM MD boards are used as passive fire protection for structural steel columns, beams, and trusses in commercial and industrial buildings. Rigid board form factor allows precise fitting around complex steel profiles and connection details. Non-combustible Class A rating satisfies building regulation requirements for structural fire protection in the UK (BS 476), EU (EN 13501), and equivalent national standards.
Firewall and Compartment Separation
Fire-rated partition walls, floor/ceiling assemblies, and cable penetration seals in commercial buildings, data centres, industrial plants, and tunnel infrastructure. Calcium silicate board is the standard substrate for fire compartment wall construction in sensitive environments including server rooms and pharmaceutical manufacturing.
Fire Door Cores
Core material in steel and timber fire door construction for 60-minute and 120-minute fire-rated door assemblies. Composite construction with appropriate facing materials integrates into door leaf assembly with reduced site processing requirements.
Cable Tray and Electrical Trunking Fire Barriers
Fire stopping around cable trays, conduit runs, and electrical duct penetrations through fire-rated walls and floors in buildings and industrial plants.
Industrial Thermal and Acoustic Panels
Industrial equipment housings, generator enclosures, compressor room linings, and HVAC plant room panels where the board must provide both thermal insulation and a degree of acoustic attenuation, with a cleanable or paintable external surface provided by the composite facing.
Building Envelope and Facade Systems
High-performance facade panels in commercial construction where non-combustible Class A board is required by building regulations (post-Grenfell UK requirements, EU Construction Products Regulation). Composite facing options allow direct use as an architectural substrate.
Complex Geometry Insulation
Where standard flat calcium silicate boards require extensive on-site modification to fit curved surfaces, branching pipe networks, or irregular equipment housings, METHERM MD composite construction can incorporate flexible facing layers that conform to shape while the rigid calcium silicate core provides insulation and structural form.
Packaging & Storage
METHERM MD boards are supplied in standard flat board formats. Board size, thickness, and composite configuration vary by product specification — contact the sales team for current stock formats and minimum order quantities applicable to your project.
Boards are palletised and wrapped for ocean freight (FCL and LCL, FOB Shanghai). Store flat on a dry, level surface protected from water and rain. No special temperature or humidity storage requirements beyond keeping boards dry. Shelf life is indefinite for the calcium silicate core; facing and surface treatment shelf life should be confirmed at time of order.
