Overview

MEGEL MG-650-IP is the industrial-pipe specification within the MEGEL silica aerogel felt range — a flexible, hydrophobic insulation felt produced by impregnating a glass-fibre reinforcement mat with supercritically dried silica aerogel. The combined material delivers a thermal conductivity of 0.018–0.020 W/(m·K) at 25°C — measurably below still air at 0.026 W/(m·K) — with a service temperature window of −40 to 650°C continuous.

The thermal performance arises from the Knudsen effect in the silica nanopore network: pore sizes between 5 and 100 nm fall below the mean free path of air molecules at atmospheric pressure, so gas-phase conduction is suppressed to sub-air levels. Combined with the very low solid fraction of the aerogel (typical bulk density 180–220 kg/m³) and the hydrophobic surface treatment (water uptake <5% by ASTM C1763), MG-650-IP retains insulation performance under condensation, rain ingress, and outdoor service that conventional mineral wool or fibreglass batting cannot match.

For buyers specifying pipe insulation in process plant, district heating, or chemical works at temperatures up to 650°C, MG-650-IP delivers equivalent thermal resistance to 2.5× the thickness of mineral wool — a decisive advantage in retrofit applications where outer-cladding diameter is constrained. Competitive equivalents include Aspen Aerogels Pyrogel® XTE and Cabot Lumira® LA1000 at a 35–50% landed cost discount.

Applications

Steam and Process Pipe Lagging

MG-650-IP is the workhorse grade for steam-line, condensate, and process-fluid pipe insulation in chemical plants, refineries, and power generation facilities. A typical retrofit: a 150°C saturated steam line at 6" NPS, wrapped in 15 mm MG-650-IP and clad with 0.5 mm aluminium, reduces outer surface temperature from approximately 145°C uninsulated to below 50°C — meeting OSHA personnel-protection guidance with less than half the radial thickness mineral wool would require. Typical heat-loss reduction versus uninsulated pipe is 92–96%, and the thin profile means existing cable trays, supports, and clearances are preserved during retrofit.

District Heating Supply Lines

For new-build and retrofit district heating networks operating in the 90–180°C range, MG-650-IP felt at 10–15 mm wrapped over the carrier pipe — protected by stainless-steel banding and a polyethylene or steel outer casing — delivers thermal resistance equivalent to 30–40 mm of conventional polyurethane foam. The thinner radial profile reduces trench cross-section, cutting civil works cost in dense urban environments. GB/T 51410 (China district heating standard) recognises silica aerogel as a primary insulation option for supply lines above DN200.

Chemical Plant Reactor and Vessel Insulation

Reactor walls, distillation column lower sections, and process vessels operating in the 200–600°C range use MG-650-IP felt cut and fitted around irregular geometries — flanges, valve bonnets, manhole nozzles — where rigid panel insulation cannot conform. The flexibility of the glass-fibre matrix allows on-site cutting and wrap installation by general industrial labour without specialist fabrication. For caustic, acidic, or solvent-exposed environments, an outer stainless-steel sheath protects against chemical attack on the reinforcement.

Retrofit Energy Audit Compliance

Industrial facilities undergoing ISO 50001 energy management audits frequently identify uninsulated or poorly insulated pipework as the largest single source of process heat loss. MG-650-IP retrofit at high-loss locations (typically pipe runs above 100°C, valve bonnets, pump casings) delivers measurable kWh/year savings with payback periods commonly under 18 months. The thin-section advantage matters where existing structural clearances would not accept conventional 50–100 mm mineral-wool insulation.

Packaging & Storage

MG-650-IP is supplied as rolled felt — typical roll formats 1.0 × 10 m or 1.5 × 6 m at 10 mm thickness — packaged in polyethylene film and corrugated cartons. MOQ is 50 m² (one standard roll); container shipments cover 1,500–3,000 m² per 40' container depending on selected thickness. FOB Shanghai is standard; CIF and DAP available against firm orders.

Store in dry conditions below 40°C, away from open flame source. The hydrophobic surface treatment eliminates humidity restrictions on storage, but rolls should be kept flat or vertical on pallets — prolonged horizontal stacking can compress the felt and reduce thermal performance at the bottom of the stack. Shelf life is 24 months in original packaging; performance does not degrade after this period but CoA validity expires.

On-site cutting should use a sharp utility knife or shears. The felt releases minimal dust during cutting, but standard P100 respirator and eye protection are recommended for prolonged handling. Off-cuts and trim waste can be recycled through standard construction waste streams.
