Overview
MEGEL MG-650-OR is the oil-refining specification within the MEGEL silica aerogel felt range, engineered for the high-temperature, hydrocarbon-exposed service conditions found in refinery process units. The reinforcement is an E-glass fibre matrix chosen for elevated-temperature dimensional stability — distinguishing OR from the standard glass-fibre mat used in MG-650-IP — and the felt is rated to 800°C peak short-duration service (in addition to 650°C continuous), covering hot oil heater outlet piping, vacuum distillation column upper sections, and reformer transfer lines.
Two procurement-relevant differentiators target refinery service:
-
Corrosion-under-insulation (CUI) mitigation. The hydrophobic surface treatment (water uptake <5% by ASTM C1763, water contact angle 130–145°) prevents moisture migration to the substrate steel. CUI is the largest single source of mechanical-integrity failures on refinery process piping, and elimination of liquid-water residence time at the steel surface is the primary engineering control.
-
Single-material temperature range coverage. Refinery process units typically include piping at temperatures from ambient (storage tank manifolds, water-wash returns) to 700°C+ (catalytic cracker reactor outlet). MG-650-OR's service window from −40 to 800°C peak means one insulation specification covers the full process tree, simplifying procurement, installation training, and warehouse SKU management.
MEGEL MG-650-OR is functionally equivalent to Aspen Aerogels Pyrogel® XTF for high-temperature refinery service, supplied at a 35–50% landed cost discount with full third-party CoA documentation.

Applications
Refinery Crude and Vacuum Distillation Columns
Atmospheric and vacuum distillation column shells, side-cut piping, and overhead vapour lines operate in the 200–550°C range and require insulation that retains thermal performance under decades of continuous service. MG-650-OR at 25–40 mm thickness wrapped on column shells — clad with 0.5 mm aluminium or 304 stainless — reduces column shell surface temperature, lowers radiant heat loss, and meets the API 953 / API 510 inspectability criteria for insulation removal during turnarounds. The thin-section advantage allows additional insulation within existing structural clearances during energy-retrofit projects.
Heat Exchanger and Reboiler Service
Shell-and-tube heat exchanger shells, kettle reboiler shells, and ancillary connection piping in the 250–500°C range use MG-650-OR for thermal performance combined with rapid access during turnaround inspections. The flexible felt format allows tear-and-replace removal at flange joints without specialist tooling, reducing turnaround critical-path time. Reboiler shells operating at 400°C+ benefit from the high-temperature lambda curve — at 400°C, MG-650-OR delivers 0.040–0.046 W/(m·K), versus mineral wool typical 0.080 W/(m·K) at the same temperature.
Hot Oil and Hydrocarbon Transfer Lines
Hot oil heater transfer piping, FCC slurry-return lines, and visbreaker outlet manifolds operate near the upper limit of conventional insulation service (typically 350–700°C). MG-650-OR's 800°C peak rating provides headroom for transient temperature excursions during process upsets and start-up/shutdown cycles that would damage mineral wool or calcium silicate insulation. The hydrophobic surface combined with stainless-steel outer cladding maintains insulation performance under monsoon-season rainfall exposure typical of Gulf and Asian refinery sites.
Corrosion-Under-Insulation (CUI) Critical Service
CUI is the dominant failure mode for refinery piping operating in the 60–175°C range — the temperature window where water condensation at the steel surface drives accelerated chloride-induced corrosion. MG-650-OR's hydrophobicity, combined with a properly sealed stainless-steel cladding system, prevents liquid water residence at the substrate. Risk-based inspection (RBI) programs increasingly specify hydrophobic aerogel insulation in CUI-critical service classes for both new construction and CUI-mitigation retrofits on existing assets.
Packaging & Storage
MG-650-OR is supplied as rolled felt in 1.0 × 10 m or 1.5 × 6 m formats, packaged in heat-sealed polyethylene film with corrugated cartons designed for ocean-freight rough handling. Standard documentation includes batch CoA covering bulk density, thermal conductivity at 25/200/400°C, hydrophobicity, fire classification, and a manufacturer compliance statement for API and ASME insulation specifications. MOQ is 50 m²; container shipments cover 1,500–3,000 m² per 40' container.
Storage is dry, below 40°C, with no humidity restrictions. For refinery turnaround spare-stock inventory, sealed packaging preserves the certificate-of-analysis chain-of-custody for QA traceability. On-site cutting uses a sharp utility knife; offcut waste should be collected in dedicated containers if the refinery operates a specialised insulation-waste stream for CUI-monitoring purposes.
