Overview

METHERM Microporous M 1100 is a rigid, high-performance thermal insulation board based on a fumed silica (SiO₂) microporous core matrix, formulated to extend the maximum continuous service temperature to 1100°C while maintaining the same ultra-low thermal conductivity as the standard M 1000 grade. The extended temperature ceiling is achieved through the use of higher-grade ceramic fibre reinforcement and a higher-purity opacifier formulation that retains infrared suppression effectiveness at temperatures above 1000°C, where standard opacifier formulations may begin to lose efficiency.

Like all grades in the METHERM microporous range, M 1100 achieves its outstanding thermal performance through the Knudsen effect combined with opacification. The nanoporous fumed silica matrix suppresses gas-phase heat transfer to below the conductivity of still air; opacifiers — silicon carbide (SiC) or titanium dioxide (TiO₂) — attenuate radiation at elevated temperatures. The result is a thermal conductivity of 0.020 W/(m·K) at 20°C, rising only gradually to 0.033 W/(m·K) at 800°C — identical to M 1000. This near-flat lambda-temperature relationship, maintained to 1100°C, is the unique engineering advantage of M 1100 for the highest-temperature backup insulation applications.

M 1100 is specified when application service temperatures are in the range 1000–1100°C, or where transient temperature excursions above 1000°C must be tolerated. Typical industries include ceramic sintering (1050–1100°C peak firing temperatures), aluminium melting (furnace atmosphere temperatures can approach 1000–1050°C), and some steel industry applications where hot-face temperatures at the board position transiently exceed 1000°C. For applications firmly below 1000°C with no transient risk, M 1000 is the cost-appropriate specification.

M 1100 is non-combustible (Class A1), asbestos-free, CFC-free, and fully machinable on site using standard tools. Flexural strength is 0.12 MPa and compressive strength 0.3 MPa — identical to M 1000. When enhanced mechanical strength is additionally required at the M 1100 temperature ceiling, contact East Materials to discuss requirements.

Competitive equivalents at the 1100°C temperature class include Microtherm MPS HT grade, and Morgan Thermal Ceramics MPC 1100. METHERM M 1100 is manufactured by Henan Minmetals East New Materials Co., Ltd. and available for direct export enquiry.

When to Choose M 1100 vs M 1000

M 1100 and M 1000 share identical thermal conductivity values at all published measurement points (20°C, 200°C, 400°C, 800°C). The sole differentiator is maximum service temperature: M 1000 is rated to 1000°C continuous; M 1100 is rated to 1100°C continuous.

Specify M 1100 when:

  • The application involves continuous service temperatures between 1000°C and 1100°C
  • The installation is rated to 1000°C but transient temperature excursions above 1000°C are possible (e.g. furnace temperature control overshoots, kiln upset conditions)
  • The board is positioned as backup insulation directly behind a 1000–1100°C rated hot-face material, where the board face temperature may intermittently approach or exceed 1000°C
  • Industry or customer specifications require a material rated to 1100°C regardless of actual operating temperature

Specify M 1000 when:

  • Continuous and transient temperatures are firmly below 1000°C
  • Cost optimisation is a priority and the M 1100 temperature margin is not needed

Specify M 1000 Max when:

  • Temperature is below 1000°C but mechanical robustness (vibration, installation handling) is the primary concern

Applications

Ceramic Sintering Kilns

High-temperature ceramic sintering — technical ceramics, advanced ceramics, heavy clay bodies, and specialty refractory products — requires peak firing temperatures of 1050–1100°C or above. M 1100 backup insulation panels behind the hot-face refractory brick or ceramic fibre module lining in these kilns operate well within the rated temperature envelope. The flat-lambda characteristic of M 1100 means that the backup layer provides predictable, calculable thermal resistance across the full firing cycle. Kiln car deck insulation in high-temperature ceramic kilns is also a primary M 1100 application, reducing car thermal mass and improving kiln energy efficiency.

Aluminium Melting Furnaces

Aluminium melting and refining furnaces operate at aluminium bath temperatures of 700–900°C, with furnace atmosphere temperatures at the roof and upper sidewall potentially approaching 950–1050°C in some designs. M 1100 provides a safe temperature margin for backup insulation in these upper zones. The non-combustible Class A1 rating and the extremely thin cross-section of M 1100 panels allow effective insulation of aluminium furnace walls without the thermal mass penalty of thicker conventional backup insulation systems.

Industrial Furnaces with Transient Excursion Risk

Continuous reheating furnaces, rotary kilns, and pusher furnaces used in steel, cement, and lime production can experience temperature excursions above 1000°C in the backup insulation zone during start-up, overload, or control upsets. Specifying M 1100 rather than M 1000 provides a 100°C safety margin for these events without any penalty in ambient or mid-temperature thermal conductivity.

Glass Manufacturing — Specialty Applications

Float glass furnace crown and regenerator insulation systems operate at extremely high temperatures where M 1100's extended temperature ceiling over M 1000 provides the necessary margin. The flat-lambda characteristic ensures that the insulation calculation remains valid across the entire furnace temperature profile from cold startup to full operating temperature.

Cement and Lime Kilns

Rotary kiln shell backup insulation in cement clinker and lime production involves continuous exposure to temperatures in the 900–1100°C range at the brick/board interface. M 1100 is the appropriate specification for these applications; M 1000 should not be used where shell brick temperatures may approach or exceed 1000°C.

Packaging & Storage

METHERM Microporous M 1100 panels are supplied as rigid flat boards. Standard board format is typically 1000 × 500 mm; standard thickness range is 15–50 mm. Custom thickness and cut-to-size are available for container-quantity orders. Boards are carton-packaged and palletised for ocean freight (FCL and LCL, FOB Shanghai).

Handle with gloves — the fumed silica matrix produces fine respirable silica dust when boards are cut, broken, or abraded. On-site cutting should use standard masonry saw or woodworking tools with dust extraction or local exhaust ventilation. Boards are fragile under point impact; store flat on a level pallet and do not stack heavy loads directly on panels.

Store dry, away from water and rain. No special temperature or humidity requirements beyond keeping boards dry. Shelf life is indefinite in dry storage.
