HJSIL® Fumed Silica and MESIL® Coupling Agent in composites materials

HJSIL® Fumed silica, also known as pyrogenic silica, is a type of silica that is commonly used as a reinforcing filler in composites. This material is made by vaporizing silicon tetrachloride in a high-temperature flame, resulting in microscopic spheres of silica that can be collected and processed into a fine powder. 

When HJSIL® 200 into a composite, fumed silica acts as a reinforcement that increases the material's stiffness and strength. It also helps to improve the dimensional stability of the composite and can reduce the material's thermal expansion coefficient. Additionally, fumed silica can be used to improve the electrical and thermal conductivity of composites, as well as their surface finish. It is often used in composites that are subjected to high temperature and mechanical stress, such as advanced ceramics, high-temperature insulation, and electrical components. It is also used in dental and medical composites, where it helps to improve the mechanical properties and biocompatibility of the material.


MESIL® Coupling Agent is a material that is used to improve the interface between the reinforcement and matrix phases in composite materials. The main role of a coupling agent is to improve the adhesion between the reinforcement and matrix, which can result in improved mechanical properties and enhanced performance of the composite.

Coupling agents can be divided into two main categories: chemical and physical. Chemical coupling agents are typically organosilanes, which have both a Hydrophobic portion and a Hydrophilic portion. The hydrophobic portion of the coupling agent interacts with the reinforcement, while the hydrophilic portion interacts with the matrix. This results in a covalent bond between the reinforcement and matrix, which significantly improves the adhesion between the two phases.
